Same-Store Convenience Store Sales Down 1.6% On Year
TOKYO (NQN)--Same-store sales at convenience stores nationwide fell 1.6% on the year in September, to 713.7 billion yen, for the third straight month of decline, the Japan Franchise Association said Monday.
Typhoons that struck Japan in the middle of the month have been cited for part of the reduction in business. The number of customers to stores was also down from the previous month by 1.8%, marking the second straight month of decrease. Sales per customer, however, rose 0.2% to 588 yen, marking the first rise in three months. Sales of cups of coffee brewed at stores were notably solid.
The number of convenience stores rose 5.5% since last September, and all-store sales, including stores that did not exist as of last year, rose 3.5% to 786.2 billion yen. The overall number of customers rose 1%, and sales per customer rose 2.4%.
Sales of daily foods, including fresh coffee and deep-fried foods, rose 7.8%, while sales of drinks and other processed foods fell 0.3%.
