All-Time-High 1.24mn Japanese Living Abroad
TOKYO (Nikkei)--A record 1.24 million Japanese citizens were residing abroad as of Oct. 1, 2012, a 5.7% increase over the previous year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Monday.
The rise has been fueled by the overseas expansion of Japanese businesses, particularly in Asia. The number includes permanent residents of foreign nations and those living abroad for three months or longer, but excludes data from Afghanistan and Iraq.
The highest tallies came from the U.S. with 410,973 Japanese nationals, China with 150,399, and Australia with 78,664.
