Same-Store Sales At Department Stores Up 2.8% On Year In Sept
TOKYO (NQN)--Same-store sales at department stores nationwide rose 2.8% on year in September, up for the second straight month, The Japan Department Stores Association said Friday.
Total sales reached 444.3 billion yen.
Sales of clothing were solid. In particular, autumn clothing sold well, thanks to cool weather. Sales of luxury watches and other high-end items also rose. Clothing sales increased 3.2%, while those of fine art, jewelry and precious metals climbed 6.3%.
The expansion was driven by overseas tourists, who buy a lot of branded products on their trips to Japan. Tourist entries from Southeast Asia and China recovered, helping sales of duty-free items more than double compared with last year.
An executive at the association said it was almost certain sales would be higher for the calendar year if the current trend continues.
