Takashimaya, Mitsukoshi Collaborate On Launch Of Kimono Week
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Two of Tokyo's most renowned department stores are collaborating to promote Japanese kimono culture, as the improving economy is starting to boost sales of high-end items, including kimono.
- Tokyo Kimono Week 2013 kicks off in Tokyo's Nihombashi district.
Takashimaya Co.'s (8233) Tokyo main outlet in Chuo Ward and Mitsukoshi department store's nearby Nihombashi main outlet, run by Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. (3099), are participating in Tokyo Kimono Week 2013, which runs Thursday through Oct. 29.
"I hope this event will increase the number of people who wear kimono," the head of Mitsukoshi's Nihombashi store said.
Though the kimono market has been in a general decline for a long time, sales at department stores have been on the rise recently. Kimono sales at all Takashimaya outlets for the six months ended August rose 2% on the year, while those at Mitsukoshi's Nihombashi outlet were up 2% in the six months ended September. High-end kimonos priced at more than 1 million yen are selling particularly well, a Takashimaya official said.
