Sharp To Make Efficient Smartphone LCDs At 2nd Site
OSAKA (Nikkei)--Sharp Corp. (6753) said Thursday it will start mass production of energy-efficient IGZO (indium-gallium-zinc oxide) LCD panels for smartphones at its Kameyama No. 2 plant by year's end.
The company currently produces the panels at its Tenri plant in Nara Prefecture. As a second base for production, the Kameyama facility is to help meet demand from other companies.
Displays using IGZO panels consume less than 20% of the power needed by conventional products. IGZO panels are only used in Sharp devices at present, but the company aims to supply other manufacturers as well.
The Kameyama plant, online since 2006, is a chief production base that produces LCD panels from "eighth generation" large glass substrates. Sharp is hurrying to shift the focus to high-value-added small- and midsize LCD panels as its larger panels face stiff competition from South Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers.
