New Fit Sets Honda Record For 1st-Month Orders
TOKYO (Nikkei)--The third-generation Fit has surpassed the original as the Honda Motor Co. (7267) car with the fastest pace of orders in its debut month.
Honda said Monday it had received 62,000 orders for the new compact car, on sale in Japan since Sept. 6. That is more than four times the company's monthly sales goal of 15,000. Honda said 57% of these orders represent drivers switching from rival automakers, more than the typical 30-40%.
Seventy percent of the orders are for the hybrid version, which has the world's best fuel economy -- 36.4km per liter. The new Fit is also roomier than previous ones. The model first appeared in 2001 and sells worldwide.
Hybrids are taking center stage in Japan's auto market. The Fit ranked fourth in new-car sales last month. Toyota Motor Corp.'s (7203) Aqua and Prius hybrids took first and third place, respectively.
