Toyota's Aqua Hybrid Top Seller For April-Sept
TOKYO (NQN)--Sales of Toyota Motor Corp.'s (7203) Aqua hybrid reached 127,993 units for the six months ended September, topping Japan's car sales rankings. However, sales marked a 2.3% fall on the year due to the end of the government's sales incentives for environmentally friendly vehicles.
The information was released Friday by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Mini Vehicles Association, and includes minicar sales.
Second place was taken by Toyota's Prius, with sales falling 19.2% to 121,634 units. The hybrid vehicle topped sales rankings during the quarter ended June, but was then overtaken by the Aqua in July.
Honda Motor Co.'s (7267) N Box, Daihatsu Motor Co.'s (7262) Move, Suzuki Motor Corp.'s (7269) Wagon R and Daihatsu's Mira took the third, fourth, fifth and sixth places, respectively. All are minicars.
Of these four, the Move was the only model that saw overall sales increase, up 44.5% to 107,591 units. N Box sales fell 7% to 110,155 units. Wagon R sales stood at 88,071 units, down 8.7%, while sales of the Mira dropped 26.6% to 76,690 units.
Suzuki's Spacia miniwagon, which started selling in March, came in ninth place, with 64,003 units sold in the first half of fiscal 2013.
The associations also released sales rankings for September on the same day, with the Aqua at No. 1. Aqua sales jumped 20.4% to 26,543 units, remaining at the top for the third straight month. The N Box came in second, with sales climbing 19.1% to 23,723 units. The Prius placed third, followed by Honda's Fit compact car that hit the market last month. Prius sales rose 4.4% to 23,069 units, while sales of the Fit reached 19,388 units, up 55%.
