Nikkei Dips Below 14,000 On Worries Over U.S. Govt Shutdown
TOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks were falling sharply Friday morning before trimming their losses, with the Nikkei Stock Average briefly slipping 185 points to 13,971.
The benchmark index dipped below the psychologically important 14,000 mark during trading hours for the first time since Sept. 6.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed the overnight session 136 points lower on concerns that the shutdown of some government departments and agencies will continue. The dollar's decline to the upper-96 yen level, the currency's lowest level in about a month, is also prompting selling of blue chips.
