Izumiya, FamilyMart To Open Hybrid Stores Together
OSAKA (Nikkei)--Supermarket operator Izumiya Co. (8266) said Friday that it will join forces with convenience store operator FamilyMart Co. (8028) to launch hybrid stores combining the strengths of both.
The first of these is slated to launch Oct. 29 in Osaka. It will operate 24 hours a day and have about 400 sq. meters of floor space, less than Izumiya's smallest supermarkets. The store will carry roughly 5,000 items, around 50% more than a typical FamilyMart location.
About 40% of the lineup will consist of Izumiya products. The store will offer prepared dishes freshly made at a nearby Izumiya supermarket. The second floor will feature a 42-seat eat-in section with Wi-Fi access, part of an effort to get shoppers to spend more by staying longer.
Izumiya hopes to attract customers by offering a one-stop destination for fresh and prepared food as well as convenience stores' products and services.
A second hybrid store is slated to open next year. Izumiya will launch the stores as FamilyMart franchises -- an unusual instance of a major supermarket becoming a convenience store franchisee. The firm did not disclose a first-year sales target.
