Daihatsu's Tanto Gets 1st Full Makeover In 6 Years
TOKYO (NQN)--Daihatsu Motor Co. (7262) said Thursday it has begun selling a fully restyled Tanto minicar for the first time since 2007.
The new Tanto gets mileage of 28km/l, and all models qualify for a tax break for environmentally friendly vehicles.
The car offers a great deal of interior space for a minivehicle. Daihatsu moved the driver's seat back, putting an additional 12cm between the driver's head and the windshield. The car also offers an additional 2cm of headroom. The new-model Tanto is about 10kg lighter than previous versions because steel used in the exterior body panels was replaced with resin.
The carmaker has priced the new Tanto at 1.17-1.75 million yen and has set a monthly sales target set of 12,000 vehicles. Daihatsu Motor President Masanori Mitsui said at a news conference Thursday that holding the car's price down was one of the company's top priorities.
With competition intensifying in the minicar market, Daihatsu moved the Tanto's release date forward by about two months. "We would like to maintain the largest share in the minicar market," Mitsui said.
