Rakuten Marks Eagle's First-Ever Pennant With Bargain Sales
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Rakuten Inc. (4755) began group-wide discount sales Friday to celebrate the previous evening's victory of its baseball team, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, for Japan's Pacific League pennant.
Department stores under the Rakuten group started sales in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, where the team's home field is located. Stores offered discounts referencing the number 77, the number on the baseball team manager Senichi Hoshino's uniform.
It has been about two and a half years since the Great East Japan Earthquake struck Tohoku and other areas, and local residents are hoping that the baseball team's victory will give a boost economy.
Other businesses are also celebrating the win. At Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd.'s (3099) department store in Sendai, staff celebrated the start of five-day sales by cracking open a large paper ball hanging from the ceiling, unleashing a blizzard of confetti. A department store in Fujisaki, Sendai, has started selling figurines of eagles made of pure gold for 7.7 million yen, while shops under the Yamaya Corp. liquor store chain have began selling soft drinks for 77 yen and shochu distilled sprits for 770 yen.
