Uniqlo Unveils 50% Warmer Thermal Underwear
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Fast Retailing Co. (9983) unit Uniqlo said Wednesday it will begin selling thermal underwear in November with 1.5 times the insulation power of its current Heattech heat-generating apparel.
Dubbed Heattech Extra Warm, the new underwear is made with the fabric facing the skin knitted differently to retain heat more efficiently. At 1,500 yen, it costs around 50% more than existing products. It is expected to be worn by people engaging in winter sports and mountain climbing.
This fall and winter, the retailer will also add 10% more items to its Heattech line, including leggings and shorts. In addition, it will sell women's underwear infused with camellia oil to increase moisturizing.
Another new product being introduced is the Ultra Light Down women's lightweight down vest weighing just 79 grams, 30% less than existing products. To help stimulate demand, Uniqlo will recommend that the vest be worn layered under coats.
Ultra Light Down and Heattech are strategic fall and winter product lines for Uniqlo. This fiscal year, the company aims to exceed last year's total of 130 million Heattech products sold worldwide.
