White Goods Shipments Up 1.6% In Aug
TOKYO (NQN)--Domestic shipments of air conditioners, refrigerators and other major home appliances for August rose 1.6% on the year to 178.86 billion yen, marking the third straight monthly increase, the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association reported Tuesday.
Shipments rose as hot weather across the country prompted people to buy high-priced air conditioners with air-purifying and energy-saving functions. Shipments of air conditioners rose 3.9% to 60.12 billion yen, up for the third consecutive month. Shipments of washing machines moved into positive territory for the first time in two months, climbing 9.6% to 22.52 billion yen.
With housing starts increasing, shipments of home-related appliances were strong. Shipments of ventilation fans rose 6.5% to 8.41 billion yen, for example, while those of dishwashers saw a 13.3% jump to 2.91 billion yen.
