Canon, Samsung, Others Seek Common Ground On Mobile Printing
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Canon Inc. (7751) has joined Hewlett-Packard Co., Samsung Electronics Co. and Xerox Corp. in an effort to standardize software for printing from mobile devices.
On Tuesday, the quartet formed the Mopria Alliance, which aims to "promote, simplify and increase accessibility of wireless printing from smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices," according to a news release.
Using a printer has meant installing a specific driver for each brand. Having common standards could allow for easy printing on the go.
The alliance will seek to grow by reaching out to application developers as well as manufacturers of printers and mobile devices.
Keeping printers relevant by making them work better with mobile devices appears to be another goal of the initiative. With smartphones and tablet computers proliferating, printing itself is in decline.
