New Honda Fit Boasts World's Highest Fuel-Efficiency
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Honda Motor Co. (7267) on Friday will launch sales of its revamped Fit subcompact, the hybrid version of which has an unmatched fuel efficiency of 36.4km per liter.
The 1.5-liter model knocks Toyota Motor Corp.'s (7203) Aqua subcompact hybrid, capable of getting 35.4km/l, from the top of the fuel-efficiency ranking.
Honda will begin selling the car overseas after launching domestic sales. The hybrid starts at 1.635 million yen, less than the 1.690 million yen for the Aqua.
The Fit will also come in a gasoline-only version available in two engine sizes, 1.3l and 1.5l. It will offer such optional features as automatic braking and a mechanism for avoiding head-on collisions. The price will start at 1.265 million yen.
Honda President Takanobu Ito said at a press conference Thursday that the new Fit is the company's most important model and that the automaker will promote it worldwide.
A total of 25,000 units have been ordered over the past month, with the hybrid model accounting for 70% of the total. Honda aims to sell 15,000 units a month.
