VANTAGE POINT: Growth, Technology Vital For Greener Future

TOKYO (Nikkei)--The key to solving environmental issues lies in pursuing growth strategies and technology, according to Komatsu Ltd. (6301) Chairman Masahiro Sakane.

Sakane, also a member of the government's industrial competitiveness panel, says Japan should discuss measures to fight global warming.

"Japan should do everything in its power to develop energy sources capable of sustaining a global population of 10 billion," Sakane asserts.

But the nation must first achieve economic growth, he adds, warning that if deflation continues here for another 10 years, Japan will end up in a situation similar to Greece.
