Domestic Mobile Phone Shipments Fall 24.8% On Year In Jan

TOKYO (NQN)--Domestic shipments of cell phones and PHS (personal handyphone system) handsets by Japanese manufacturers dropped 24.8% on the year to 1.85 million units in January, marking the ninth straight month of decline, according to data released Tuesday by two industry groups.

Smartphone shipments declined 25.6% to 919,000 units, falling for the first time in seven months. The slide came because many people refrained from buying new phones ahead of the release of new models in spring.

The figures, released by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association and the Communications and Information Network Association of Japan, are based on data from Japanese manufacturers, including Sharp Corp. (6753), Sony Corp. (6758) and Kyocera Corp. (6971).

The data does not include shipments of the iPhone from Apple Inc. of the U.S. and Galaxy-series phones from Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea.
