New Ishigaki Airport Opens Thursday

TOKYO (Nikkei)--The New Ishigaki Airport on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture, opened for business Thursday with a new 2,000m-long runway.

The airport extended the runway by 500m to accommodate mid-sized aircraft. Plans to expand it initially emerged in 1976.

It will handle direct flights to Tokyo's Haneda airport, as well as charter flights to and from South Korea.

Budget carrier Peach Aviation Ltd. will start flying to and from Kansai International Airport and Naha Airport from June.
