Nikkei Tops 11,800 After Dow Hits Record High

TOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks surged Wednesday morning following overnight gains on Wall Street, with the Nikkei Stock Average jumping 154.42 points, or 1.32%, to end the early session at 11,837.87.

It is the first time for the benchmark index to top 11,800 during trading hours since Sept. 29, 2008.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at a record 14,253 overnight, prompting investors to buy blue chips across the board, including carmakers, consumer electronics makers and financial firms. Retail investors continued to buy aggressively.

Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) stock rose significantly in active trade.

Sharp Corp. (6753) moved sharply higher following a report that the company will accept investment from Samsung Electronics Co. Fast Retailing Co. (9983) made big gains, too, pushing up the Nikkei Stock Average by 64 points by itself.
