Nipro Betting On Myanmar For Sales Growth
OSAKA (Nikkei)--Nipro Corp. (8086) is expanding in Myanmar in anticipation of a surge in demand for medical devices accompanying rapid economic growth.
The medical devices manufacturer will staff its office in Yangon with around five people, up from a single individual at present. It plans to turn the office into a local subsidiary in two years. It is also considering local production of medical devices.
Nipro will substantially broaden its line of products sold in the Southeast Asian nation. In addition to releasing catheters there this year, it will sell transfusion sets and increase sales of injection-related consumables such as needles that are less painful.
The company sells medical devices in Myanmar via sales agents. In the field of dialyzers and other dialysis-related equipment, it enjoys a market share in excess of 60%, and its equipment is used in 23 of the country's 35 dialysis centers.
By aggressively cultivating the market, Nipro hopes to get a leg up on the competition. It currently has sales of several hundred million yen annually but aims to double that each year.
