Searching Nikkei Archives
The search page includes a number of options for focusing your search query, including using Boolean expressions (And or Or) and searching by publication or date.
1. Modes
You can refine your search the following ways:
- New Search
- Narrow (and) - all keywords must be in the article.
- Broaden (or) - at least one keyword should appear in the article.
- Exclude (not) - keywords should not appear in the article.
For example, you could initiate a search for food. On the results page you can focus the search using the Narrow (and) option and input red. This will produce a list of results containing red and food. To exclude strawberries from the results, for example, select Exclude (not) and type strawberry to revise the string to red and food not strawberry.
2. Keywords
Slashes (//)
If you use forward slashes around a phrase, the search engine will search for that exact string of text. For example, /solar power/ will limit the search to the two or more words entered together in that order only and will eliminate articles on solar only or power in general. Double slash searches are not case-sensitive.
And
The search operator, and, narrows down a search range by finding articles containing all keywords. For example, when looking specifically for information about red wines from Yamanashi Prefecture you would write: Yamanashi and /red wine/.
Or
The search operator, or, expands a search range using keywords. For example, to find articles about wine and/or beer, your search would be: beer or wine.
Not
The search operator, not, excludes keywords from a search range. For example, if you are looking for articles on automobiles, except those about automobile exports, your search would be: automobile not export.
Parentheses ( )
Operations are executed in the order of not, and, or. If you want a specific operation to take first priority, enclose the operation in parentheses. For example, if you are looking for articles about semiconductors and PCs in Taiwan your query would be:
Taiwan and (semiconductor or PC).
If the search was about semiconductors in Taiwan and PCs (not exclusively in Taiwan) the expression would be:
Taiwan and semiconductor or PC.
Specifying publication code (BR)
To search for articles from a specific publication, please use the following codes:
- The Nikkei - TOP
- The Nikkei Business Daily - NID
- The Nikkei MJ - NMJ
- The Nikkei Veritas - NFD
- The Nikkei Weekly - TNW
For example, to find articles on financial reform in The Nikkei Weekly the query would be: /financial reform/ and BR=TNW.
3. Date Range
Select a period from the drop-down box (ranging from the last seven days to the entire database) or use the pop-up calendars to select specific start and end dates.
