Old, new helping region progress
Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc. has awarded the 2006 Nikkei Asia Prizes to three individuals who have contributed to the region's development by drawing on the rich traditions of their home countries. Recognized for carving out a new future for Asia are a Singaporean manager who is working to solve the water problem in the country and elsewhere; another Singaporean leader of that country's science and technology industry, who is also giving opportunities to researchers from other parts of Asia; and a Cambodian performing artist who has preserved an ancient dance tradition while sending a message about contemporary political issues.

Nikkei Asia Prizes
Launched by Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc. in 1996, the awards program honors people in Asia who have made significant contributions in three areas: regional growth; science, technology and innovation; and culture.
The prizes target individuals and groups in northeastern, southeastern, southern and central Asia, excluding Japan. The selection committee is chaired by Shoichiro Toyoda, honorary chairman of the Japan Business Federation (Nippon Keidanren).
